The Treasure in you
Deep within each of us lies buried treasure—untapped talents, hidden gifts, and unfulfilled dreams. Yet, many keep these treasures locked away, buried beneath fear, doubt and excuses. We tell ourselves we’re not talented enough, not ready, or that someone else could do it better. You may not realise it yet, but the world is waiting for what you have to offer.
Hidden Treasure
Imagine a man who inherited a piece of land. One day, he stumbles upon an old map that hints at a treasure buried deep within his own backyard. Instead of digging, he hesitates. “What if there’s nothing there?” “What if I dig and fail?” Years pass and he never touches the ground. Eventually, the land is sold, and the new owner, curious about the map, decides to dig. Within hours, he uncovers a chest filled with gold. The first man had treasure all along but let fear keep him from discovering it.
This is how many people live their lives—sitting on dreams, talents, and ideas that could change their lives and impact the world. They take them to the grave, never realizing their full potential. It’s been said that the wealthiest place on Earth is the graveyard because it holds books never written, music never composed, businesses never started, and ideas never pursued.
The Parable of the Talents
The parable of the talents can be found in Chapter 25 of Matthew’s Gospel. Back in those days, when the book was written, a “talent” was a unit of measurement used to weigh gold or silver, therefore representing something of great value. While it referred to money back then, the spirit of the lesson applies to the actual talents, gifts and even opportunities we’ve been given today.
In the story, a man entrusts his servants with different amounts of talents before he goes away for a long journey—one receives five, another two, and the last receives one. The first two invest and multiply what they were given, but the last servant, out of fear, buries his talent in the ground. When the master returns, he praises the first two for their faithfulness and rewards them. But the one who buried his talent loses it altogether.
When you are trustworthy with the little you have, God multiplies it. What you invest in by nurturing and using will grow, but what you bury by neglecting or hiding will diminish. Fear and inaction lead to loss, while faithfulness leads to increase.
Unearth Your Potential
Don’t despise what you’ve been given, no matter how small it seems. It doesn’t really matter whether you’ve been given one, two or five “talents“. That gift, idea, or skill you’ve been neglecting could be the key to something greater than you ever imagined. Cultivate it. Develop it. Put it to work. You never know what it could become.
Your treasure was never meant to stay buried, so dig it up and share it with the world!
